Broadband

The discovery and development of the internet is by far the most important technological milestone to hit modern businesses.

Regardless of your industry, having access to a stable, high-speed internet connection is invaluable. To a point where, a poor connection or no connection at all can actually be detrimental to your business’s day-to-day running and could cost you customers, clients or contracts.

Although similar to your home broadband setup, choosing the right contract for your business is  dependent on a few more factors. Namely:

- How many people will need access to the internet?

- How often will these people need access/be using the internet?

- How will these people connect to the internet?

These questions largely govern the speed of broadband you’ll need.

Speed is split into two:

Download speed is how fast you can pull data from the server to you. This affects things like loading web pages, streaming videos or downloading anything.

Upload speed is how fast you can send data from you to the server and others. This affects things like sending files via email, using video-chat or uploading documents via online software.

Both are measured in megabits per second (Mbps) and generally, the higher the Mbps, the faster your browsing, uploading files and everything else will be.

Remember, the speed of your internet is affected by the number of people using it. If you have quite a few employees, you’ll need a higher speed regardless.

Finally, how will people connect to the internet? For modern businesses, portability is extremely important. Long gone are the days of the traditional “wired desktop PC”.

Mobile (3G/4G) or wireless internet connections are less secure and less stable but offer more flexibility. Meaning, your internet is accessible practically anywhere.
