Energy Engineering

In order to save your business money, switching to a new, cost-effective gas and electricity supplier is certainly a great start.

But, in order to reduce your energy overheads even further, (and reduce your carbon footprint long into the future), you need to start looking at introducing a low-carbon strategy and some of the various energy-saving technologies available.

Investing in energy-saving products for your business won’t be cheap, but the savings you’ll make in the long run will more than make up for the initial capital investment.

Low-Carbon Strategy

Reduce your energy bill and carbon footprint by adopting modern, energy-saving techniques and managing existing resources more effectively.

By reviewing your organisation’s manufacturing process and overall energy consumption, we can work with your senior management to implement a tailored low-carbon strategy. This strategy will ultimately, maximise the efficiency of your current setup and propose cost-effective “green” alternatives.

Audits can be conducted for small, medium, large and international businesses. Each one is done with your objectives, time frames and costs in mind.

And as well as cementing your company's commitment to reducing carbon emissions, having a low-carbon strategy in place, may also make you eligible for various funding opportunities.

Solar Panelling

Solar panels are made up of solar photovoltaic (PV) cells. Simply put, these cells convert light into electricity.

As you don't need direct sunlight for solar panels to work, the UK is a perfect candidate for solar power!

They don’t have to be “panels” in the strictest sense either. You can have tiles, slates or glass-like membranes - although these variations may not be as effective.

As well as the panelling, you will also need to install a solar inverter, which converts the direct current (DC) produced by your panels into  “mains-standard” alternating current (AC), and then connect everything to the national grid.

As you are essentially generating your own electricity, once installed, you can apply to your energy supplier for a “feed-in-tariff” which reduces your overall energy costs going forward. You even get paid for electricity that you generate that goes back into the grid!

LED Lighting & Smart Lighting

Like death and taxes, changing a light bulb is an eventuality that everyone has to face. And businesses are no different.

Because of the sheer amount of bulbs a business is likely to have to maintain, coupled with employees’ inefficient use of them, lighting takes a huge toll on your energy overheads. And by not using energy-efficient bulbs, you’re only compounding the issue.

LED bulbs typically use 90% less energy than standard halogen bulbs. Plus, they last longer, offer better lighting levels and support dimming.

Although LED lighting comes in all shapes and sizes, making the switch to LED bulbs is as easy as… removing the old halogen bulb and sticking in a new LED bulb. No need to change sockets or do any rewiring!

Finally, if you wanted to reduce your lighting energy consumption even further, you could look at adding an absence/presence control sensor to the circuit. This automatically turns the lights it’s connected to, on or off, if people are nearby or not.

Heat Pumps

The best way to explain how a heat pump works is by imagining an air conditioning unit or refrigerator in reverse.

If you’re into your thermodynamics, the second law states: “heat will flow from hot to cold until the temperature of the systems becomes equal”.

In other words, it is impossible for heat to transfer from somewhere cold to somewhere hot, UNLESS, you use an additional bit of energy and reverse the cycle.

A heat pump will have one coil inside your property, and one outside. The interior coil draws warmth from the outside coil - heating or cooling the room as desired.

Because there isn’t an energy-intensive heating aspect to the pump, they are easy to maintain and extremely energy efficient.

When choosing a heat pump, you’ll need to consider the size, energy rating and its positioning within your property.
